Are Negative People and a Toxic Culture affecting your career progress and your health?

People we meet and have to see on a regular basis can have a negative effect on your life, but only if you let them. In the past I would find myself getting dragged down by negative comments made by a boss or friend. I realised that I was allowing these comments to affect my self-confidence and motivation. If negative people you work with i.e boss, colleagues or peers are affecting your career progress, now is the time to take positive action.

This article is about how to deal with these situations.  Furthermore its also about how to stop allowing people and their comments making you feel like a second class citizen. Lastly, it’s also about the ability to move away from being the ‘Victim’ and become a ‘Survivor’.

Imposter Syndrome

A few years ago I met a client who described a scenario to me. She had been successful in business however, she still doubted her ability and this affected her confidence. We were discussing this very subject and she admitted that she had an over-aggressive boss who she found intimidating. Here boss was affecting her career progress, self-esteem and confidence.  I too have also found myself in a similar situation when working as a HR & Training Manager in a large corporate organisation.  This dogmatic boss  also affected my confidence levels and I found myself being in-authentic and hiding behind my mask.

These types of bosses display Dictatorial leadership styles.  This leadership style is on the whole a negative style to use.  It should be used sparingly in crisis situations or where the employee needs clear direction i.e they are new.  Dictatorial bosses are often full of their own importance. They love to feel like they are in control of everyone and everything.  In addition, you will also meet people in everyday life who will try and control you.  This is  due to their desire to win at all costs or lack of self confidence in themselves.  Hence, they feel it necessary to bully others to make themselves feel good and empowered.

If you can relate to the scenario above, perhaps it’s time to walk away from that domineering boss and look at a new career or change in job.  As the saying goes ‘People don’t leave jobs they leave bad managers’.

Are the people around me enriching my life and am I enriching theirs?

A significant contributing factor to our happiness in life is the people in it. High quality personal and professional relationships can boost confidence. In addition, they can provide us with motivation and help to improve our mental wellbeing.

With this in mind, have a think about the people in your life – the ones who play the biggest role and have the most influence over you.

Ask yourself;

  • Are they enriching your life; impacting your life in a positive sense?
  • Do they make you feel good about yourself and encourage you to be the person you want to be? Or do they put you down, encourage an unhealthy lifestyle or push you in a direction you don’t want to go?

Your Career Progress

If their presence in your life is holding you back from being who you want to be and doing what you want to do, don’t be afraid to distance yourself.

If you are working for or with dogmatic managers/people who don’t enrich your life and are always finding ways to put you down, then do something about it.

You may find yourself saying to yourself: 

  • I’m in my comfort zone and it’s too much effort to change.
  • I don’t know what the next move in terms of my career. 
  • Where am I going and how do I get there?
  • I really don’t know what job would suit me best and are not sure what I’m good at.
