Effective Team Leadership


What’s it about?

Management or Leadership, what is the difference? This course will consider the role of a leader in changing organisations and appreciate the need for flexibility and adaptability in managing people and change. Delegates will be able to understand the difference between successful and effective leadership and identify the skills and attributes of an effective leader.

Course Overview

Developing yourself as a Team Leader

  •  Understand the roles, functions and responsibilities of the team leader

  • Outline the role of the team leader

  • List the responsibilities of the team leader within the team

  • Outline the limits of his / her authority and accountability

  • Give an example of a situation where you would need to refer to someone with senior authority

  • Seek feedback on workplace performance to identify strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement

  • Gather feedback on own performance from different sources

  • Interpret the feedback and areas for improvement

  • Prepare an action plan to address weaknesses and improve performance


Leading the Team

  • Understand the difference between Leadership and Management

  • Explain the difference between Leadership and Management

  • Explain why leadership is important in own team

  • Understand a range of leadership styles, their benefits and potential impact on individuals and performance

  • Describe a range of different styles

  • Identify the most commonly used leadership style(s) within an organisation

  • Explain the likely effect this leadership style(s) has on a team’s performance

  • Identify own leadership style and its impact on a team


Developing the Team 

  •  The managers role in relation to the task, team and individual

  • Identify and explore leadership styles

  • The key components of effective teams

  • Generate practical ideas for motivating individuals and the team

  • Describe and apply a structure for effective delegation

  • Define how setting meaningful objectives enables effective performance

  • Delivering feedback using a planned, structured and balanced approach

  • Put into practice key techniques and structures

  • Define a set of personal actions for further development


Improving Performance of the team

  • Understand the organisations requirements in relation to team performance

  • Outline the organisations requirements of the team in line with Company policy

  • Outline the teams objectives in achieving organisational targets

  • Explain how the individual performance of team members affects the overall performance of the team

  • Understand how to address underperformance

  • Identify indicators of underperforming in relation to own team

  • Explain the possible causes of underperformance

  • List actions that could be taken to rectify underperformance

  • Understand the role of motivation in improving performance

  • Outline a recognised theory of motivation

  • Describe actions that can be taken to motivate own team and improve performance linked to the theory of motivation
